What I Would Wear: Vacation Edition

Dieser WIWW-Post hat einen ganz besonderen Hintergrund. Ja, es steht der Sommer vor der Tuer. Ja, viele fahren in den Urlaub. Und ich bin eine der vielen Menschen, die sich voller Fernweh in den Flieger (oder das Auto) setzen und ein paar Tage abschalten und Neues kennenlernen.

Dieses Mal geht es fuer mich auf absolutes Neuland. Es geht naemlich nach Dubai. Sehr spontan und auch nicht sehr lange (nur 4 Tage), aber ich verbuche dies als "Mini-Urlaub". Nun war ich zwar schon in Marokko und Israel aber damit hoert es mit der arabischen Welt auch schon auf. Es sei denn, man zaehlt auch die Tuerkei dazu - dann kann ich das noch hinzufuegen. Aber so richtig auf der arabischen Halbinsel war ich noch nie. Dementsprechend nervoes bin ich auch, was die Kleidung betrifft, denn ich moechte auf keinen Fall irgendwo anecken. Im Internet habe ich gelesen, dass, solange es knielang ist und die Schultern bei Bedarf bedeckt werden koennen, alles in Ordnung ist. Dubai ist ja zum Glueck schon ziemlich westlich gepraegt, aber trotzdem will ich dort nicht als "typisch Westlicher" dort herausstechen.

Mein Flug geht am 30. Juni und ich komme am 4. Juli wieder zurueck. Gerade rechtzeitig zum Independence Day der Amerikaner. Ich schaetze mal, dass wir abends irgendwo zum BBQ eingeladen sind - wie ueblich. Ich fliege in Frankfurt los, komme aber in Muenchen an - spart Zeit auf dem Rueckweg, sodass ich dann vor dem BBQ noch Zeit zum duschen, ausruhen und wieder fertig machen habe. Leider gab es keine guenstigen Direktfluege mehr und somit habe ich jeweils einen (recht kurzen) Flugzeugwechsel in Katar. Viel einfacher waere es gewesen einen Direktflug nach Abu Dhabi zu nehmen und dann rund eine Stunde mit dem Bus nach Dubai, aber mein Papa und auch Dustin sind beide nicht sehr begeistert von der Idee, mich in der arabischen Welt alleine rumrennen zu sehen. Ich persoenlich traue mir das zwar zu, aber man will den Maennern in der Familie ja einen Gefallen tun. Mein Hotel wird das Fairmont The Palm - ausser, dass es dort kostenloses Wi-Fi gibt, habe ich noch nicht wirklich viel recherchiert.

Wart ihr schon einmal in Dubai und koennt mir vielleicht Kleidungstipps geben? Weiss jemand ob es okay ist Roecke/Kleider anzuziehen, die bis Mitte des Oberschenkels gehen, aber dann eine Strumpfhose darunter?

This WIWW-post has a special background story. Yes, summer is coming. Yes, a lot of people go on vacation. And I am one of those people who sit in a plane (or car) and afterwards relax a few days and explore the new country and culture.

This time, it's something absolutely new for me. I am going to Dubai. It is pretty spontaneous and not very long (only for 4 days) but I see it as a "mini- vacation". Now, I've already been to Morocco and Israel but that's about as Arabic as I went. Except if you count Turkey to it - then I can add this as well. But actually staying on the Arabian peninsula - that's a first. And therefore I am very nervous about clothing because I don't want to aggravate or even insult people with it. On the internet, I read that everything is fine as long as it is at least knee-length and that you can cover you shoulders if necessary. Fortunately, Dubai is already pretty "Western", however I do not want to stand out as the typical Westener.

My flight leaves on June 30th and I will be back on July 4th - just in time for Independence Day. I am pretty sure that we will be invited to a BBQ in the evening - as usual. I start my journey in Frankfurt but I will arrive in Munich which saves time on my way back home, so that I have enough time to shower, relax and get ready again for the BBQ. Unfortunately there were no reasonable priced direct flights so that I will have two (very short) layovers in Qatar. It would have been easier to just fly directly to Abu Dhabi and then take the bus and ride about an hour to Dubai but my dad and Dustin aren't very happy with the idea of me running around alone in the Arabic world. I personally am certain that I'm capable of doing so but I guess I will do the guys in the family a favour. My hotel will be the Fairmont The Palm - I haven't done much research on it except for the fact that they have free Wi-Fi.

Have you already been to Dubai and can help me out with clothing tips? Does anyone know if it would be okay to wear skirts/dresses that go to your thigh and then wear tights with it?

What I Would Wear: Long Flights

In etwa 4 Wochen ist es schon soweit: Die Hunde, das Haeschen und wir sitzen im Flieger nach Deutschland um ein weiteres Kapitel unseres Lebens neu zu beginnen. Oder ein altes Kapitel weiterzufuehren? Nein, ich denke, diese Zeit in Deutschland kann man als neu bezeichnen, schliesslich ist es das erste Mal, das ich in Bayern wohnen werde (oder ueberhaupt einmal laenger als 2 Tage in Bayern bin) und noch dazu mit einerm Kerl und 3 Tieren.

Auch wenn ich persoenlich eine erfahrene Vielfiegerin bin, denn meinen ersten Flug trat ich bereits mit 2 Jahren und meinen ersten Flug nach Amerika mit etwa 4 Jahren an und von da an ging es mindestens einmal im Jahr mit dem Flieger irgendwohin, eine Frage quaelt mich immer: Was ziehe ich bloss an? Bei Kurzstreckenfluegen ist die Problematik nicht so gross, bei Fluegen ab 6 Stunden moechte ich aber nicht nur gut aussehen, sondern auch Bequemlichkeit haben. Und ganz besonders bei Nachtlfuegen, die von den USA nach Europa besonders haeufig sind. Mit den letzten Jahren der Hin- und Herfliegerei - sei es in die USA, nach Deutschland oder nach Kolumbien zu meinem Papa) - habe ich bereits herausgefunden, dass Schnuerschuhe und Guertel sehr unpraktische Dinge sind, gerade wenn man durch die sich ewig hinziehenden Sicherheitskontrollen muss (und wenn man Pech hat, nicht nur einmal). Leggings, Stiefel und oversized Shirt waren bisher immer meine Favoriten: Bei der Kontrolle schnell aus den Stiefeln gehuepft, durch die Biepmaschine gelaufen, wieder in die Stiefel reinschluepfen und fertig. Zeitsparend und bequem. Aber auf die Dauer immer das gleiche Outfitschema tragen? Irgendwann wird es langweilig. Und somit habe ich euch einige Outfits zusammengestellt, die ich so auf dem herannahenden Flug (welches auch zugleich mein allererster Flug mit meinem Mann sein wird - bisher sind wir immer nur von einander weg geflogen) tragen wuerde.

Habt ihr Outfit-Geheimtips fuers Fliegen?

Only 4 more weeks and the day will be here: The dogs, the bunny and ourselves will board the plane to Germany and start a new chapter in our life. Or continue an old chapter? No, I think this time in Germany, you can file under "new" since it will be the first time I will live in Bavaria (or even stay in Bavaria for longer than 2 days) and also living there with a guy and 3 animals.

Even though I am an experienced frequent flier, my first time boarding a plane was when I was 2 years old and my first flight to the States was when I was around 4 and from then on I flew at least once a year, there;s always this one question that's bothering me: What do I wear? When I fly short distances, it's not that much of a problem but when it comes to flights over 6 hours, I don't just want to look good, I also want comfort. This goes especially for overnight flights which are pretty common going from the States to Europe. With the last few years of back and forth flying - if it was to the US, to Germany or to Colombia to see my dad - I already discovered that lace up shoes and belts are completely impractical, particularly when you have to go through the never-ending security checks (and if it's your lucky day, you have to pass them not only once). Leggings, boots and an oversized shirt have always been my favourites: Hopping out of the boots real quick, walk through the beep machine, hopping back into the boots and done. Saves time and is comfy. But wearing the same things every time you fly? It gets old. And that's why I created a few outfits that I would wear to the upcoming flight (which is also my very first flight together with my husband - so far we always flew away from each other).

What I Would Wear: Gun Range

Am Wochenende waren wir auf einer gun range. Typisch Texas/USA eben. Da ich spaeter einmal bei einem Geheimdienst oder einer Sicherheitsfirma arbeiten moechte, muss ich mich irgendwann auch an Pistolen und Gewehre und andere Knallsachen gewoehnen. Was, in meinem Fall, aber leichter gesagt als getan ist. Ich verabscheue alles, was laut ist und knallt und ganz besonders, wenn jene Knall-Verursacher auch noch toedlich sein koennen. Ich war zwar schon einmal mit auf dem Schiesstand, habe damals aber eher die Sonne genossen und war dadurch abgelenkt. Diesmal musste ich mich meiner Angst stellen. Gluecklicherweise habe ich richtig gute Ohrenstoepsel bekommen, sodass der Knall groesstenteils gedaempft wurde. Es kommt immer auf das Kaliber an und mein werter Goettergatte hat leider die grossen Kaliber dabei gehabt. Somit habe ich mich erst einmal wieder damit begnuegt, die Herbstsonne zu geniessen - mit grossem Abstand zur "Schiesszone". Spaeter konnte ich mich aber nicht mehr druecken und musste selbst ran. Allerdings nur ein einizges Mal und es war relativ schnell vorbei. Ich muss sagen, ich gewoehne mich langsam daran - richtig geheuer werden mir Pistolen, Gewehre und Kugeln wohl nie werden.

Was mir allerdings sehr aufgefallen ist: Die furchtbaren Kleidungsstuecke der anderen. Natuerlich ist es reine Hobbykleidung und auch kein Ort fuer high fashion, aber ich denke, dass man sich trotz allem ein wenig modischer kleiden kann, als uebergrosse Camouflage Jogginghosen und ausgeleierte Pullover mit Loechern. Ich habe nun also ein paar Outfits zusammengestellt, die ich persoenlich zur gun range tragen wuerde.

Findet ihr auch, dass man sich kleidungstechnisch etwas zusammenreissen kann, auch wenn es ein Hobby ist? Oder seht ihr das anders?

This weekend, we went to the gun range nearby. Typically Texas/US. Since I am planning to work for an intelligence agency or a security company, it was time to get used to guns, rifles and everything else that produces a loud boom. However, this is easier said than done; at least for me. I passionately hate everything that is loud and makes boom and especially when those noise makers can be deadly. I've already been to a gun range before but at that time, I enjoyed the sun and was distracted. This weekend it was time to face my fear. Fortunately for me, I got really good ear protection and because of that I was able to enjoy the nice autumn sun - with a safe distance to the "shooting zone". Towards late afternoon, I couldn't chicken out anymore and it was time for me to shoot. Luckily for me, I only had to shoot one single time and it was over pretty fast. I have to admit that I am slowly getting used to this stuff but guns, rifles and bullets will always give me the creeps.

What I observed though is: the horrible clothing pieces of the other people out there. Naturally, it is their "hobby clothing" and a gun range is not a place for high fashion but I think that you can still dress a wee bit more fashionable. Oversized camo sweatpants and beat up sweaters with holes in it aren't very nice to look at.

I picked a few pieces that I, personally, would wear on a day at the range.

Do you share my opinion that you can at least dress a bit normal even though it is just for a hobby? Or do you disagree?

What I Would Wear: Run For Your Lives

Im Dezember steht fuer mich ein weiteres, interessantes Event bevor: Der Run For Your Lives Marathon. Natuerlich werde ich selbst nicht rennen, ich begnuege mich damit, dass ich einen Spectator-Apocalypse-Pass bekomme und somit das Drumherum und die Apocalypseparty miterleben kann.

Zum Event kann ich Folgendes sagen: Die Laeufer rennen eine 5km Strecke, die gespickt ist mit Hindernissen und Zombie-Akteueren. Jeder Laeufer hat einen Guertel um, an denen einige Stofffetzen befestigt sind und sobald die Zombies alle Stofffetzen abgerissen haben, ist man tot, bzw. selbst ein Zombie. Das Prinzip ist also das Gleiche wie beim flag football, nur eben mit den Untoten. Ein Muss fuer jeden fitten Zombiefan, wuerde ich einfach mal behaupten.

Dazu gibt es dann Verkaufsstaende, Spielebuden und Essstaende. Nachdem alle Renndurchlaeufe vorbei sind, gibt es die Apocalypseparty mit einigen lokalen Bands oder Bands, die zu diesem Termin auf der Durchreise sind. Welche Bands genau an dem Event in Austin spielen, wurde noch nicht veroeffentlich, ich hoffe einfach mal, dass es zumindest hoerbare Musik ist.

Als Maedchen beschaeftige ich mich natuerlich mit der Frage: Was ziehe ich an? Da ich gestern bei Topshop in Austin war, habe ich mich unheimlich in einen bordeauxfarbenen Pullover verliebt. Leider war er nicht im Sale und rund $80 fuer einen grobgestrickten Pullover moechte ich dann doch nicht ausgeben. Ich hoffe also auf mein Glueck, dass er vor dem Event noch in den Sale kommt oder dass ich beim Black Friday im November zuschlagen kann.

Ueberlegt ihr euch immer vor jedem Event, was ihr anziehen wollt? Oder kommt das meist spontan?

This december, I'm attending another, interesting event: The Run For Your Lives marathon. It goes without saying that I won't run myself, I'll only get a spectator-apocalypse-pass and enjoy the apocalypse party and everything around the race.

The run itself is a 5k run with some obstacles and zombie-actors. Each runner wears a belt with fabric pieces on it and as soon as the zombies ripped off all your fabric, you're dead - or, well, a zombie yourself. Technically, it's the same system as flag football, just with the Undead. It's a must for every zombie fan, I'd say.

Other than the race, they will have vendors, game and food stands. After all the race waves, there will be an Apocalypse Party with local bands and bands that are passing through the city during their tour. They haven't posted the band line up for Austin yet, I am hoping that it's at least decent music.

As a girl, my biggest question is: What am I going to wear? Yesterday, I went to Topshop and fell in love with a wonderful burgundy knit top. Unfortunately, it wasn't on sale and I don't really want to spend almost $80 for a net knit sweater. I simply hope it will go on sale soon or that I am lucky enough to score on Black Friday in November.
